The camera stays in the same place, but a person's pose or an object's position suddenly changes. The removed slice of time remains visible as a jump.

Cut a middle section from two clips with matching framing and join them directly. Choose the edit point by how far you want the subject to move across the frame.

A hard cut is any direct edit; a jump cut is a direct edit where a time skip is visible within similar framing. Make a large jump feel intentional rather than accidental.

When to use

Use it to trim pauses or repetition and pick up the pace in a talking shot. Check the pose change between cuts so a large jump does not feel jarring by accident.
