⇢Scene transitions

See how cuts, dissolves, and slides move from one shot to the next and when each fits. — 13 entries

One shot gradually fades as the next appears over it.

The incoming shot moves in and pushes the outgoing shot away.

The basic edit: one shot ends and the next begins with no transition effect.

A time skip within a similar shot makes the subject appear to jump forward.

A sudden cut slams together shots with sharply different moods or energy.

A shot fades into black, then the next gradually emerges from it.

The image rises into white, then the next shot appears through it.

A one- or two-frame flash inserted around a cut creates a brief burst of light.

A circular opening closes over a shot or opens to reveal the next one.

Interpolation between nearly matching shots softens the jump of an edit.

The edit briefly leaves the main action for a related shot, then returns.

Shots from different places alternate to suggest parallel action or a connection.

An edit hidden by darkness or an occluding object can make two shots feel continuous.
