Think of two transparent sheets laid together while one is slowly lifted away. For a moment, both moments share the frame.

Overlap the clips on the timeline and lower the outgoing clip's opacity as the incoming clip rises. On the web, animate the two layers' opacity in opposite directions.

Unlike a fade through black, the shots overlap directly. A long blend can look muddy, so save it for a gentle shift such as elapsed time or a memory.

When to use

Use it for a gentle passage of time or a move into a memory. A direct cut is clearer for fast action or precise information.
